Disabling Random MAC Addresses
Updated 01/28/2022

What is the purpose of this setting/feature?
When you're not connected to a Wi-Fi network, your device sends a signal to look for Wi-Fi networks in the area to help you get connected. The signal contains the unique physical hardware (MAC) address for your device's Wi-Fi hardware. Some places, for example shopping malls, stores, or other public areas, might use this unique address to track your movement in that area. If your Wi-Fi hardware supports it, you can turn on random hardware addresses to make it harder for people to track you when your device scans for networks and connects.

Why are Random MAC Addresses a problem?
For a managed wireless network like ours, we use your device's MAC address to register your device on our network. This enables seamless roaming as you move around campus and your device connects and disconnects from various wireless nodes. Requiring device registration also increases security across campus.
If your device changes its MAC address, then out system will treat it as a brand new unregistered device, and you will need to constantly re-register it.
That will quickly become a troublesome experience.
For that reason we recommend that the setting be disabled.
